Pervez Amirali Hoodbhoy joined Developments in Literacy in March 2000. As an advisory Board member to DIL Pakistan, he advises on project and office operations, where all major policy proposals are put before the Board for their comments and analysis.
As a professor of the Department of Physics at the Quaid-e-Azam University in Pakistan, Pervez Hoodbhoy has over 30 years experience in Science & Research.
Over the years Pervez Hoodbhoy has assumed major positions & responsibilities including Visiting Research Scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of Maryland, referee for Physical Review Letters, Chairman of Mashal, a non-profit organization for the publication of books on modern thought, Chairman of Academic Council of Textile Institute of Pakistan, member of editorial board of INESAP bulletin published from Darmstadt Germany, member of governing board of Sustainable Development Policy Institute (Islamabad) & Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture (Karachi). From 1998-1990 he was also the initiator and co-director of World Laboratory Project on Cosmology and High Energy Physics in Pakistan.
Pervez Hoodbhoy has received numerous awards for his work in the field of Science. In 1990 he received the Faiz Ahmed Faiz Award for contributions towards the cause of education in Pakistan. In 1993 he was awarded the “Book of the Year Award” from National Book Council of Pakistan. His most recent award, in 2003, was the UNESCO Kalinga Award for the popularization of science in Pakistan. Prior to this he has also received the Baker Award for Electronics and the Abdus Salam Award for Mathematics.
Pervez Hoodbhoy received his PhD in Nuclear Physics from the Mass. Institute of Technology. He has published books such as ‘Islam & Science- Religious Orthodoxy and the Battle for Rationality published by ZED books, London with translations in many languages; proceedings of School on Fundamental Physics and Cosmology, co-edited with A. Ali, World Scientific, Singapore; Education & the State – 50 years of Pakistan; and Nuclear Peace Reader.
He has also produced and compeered many TV programs related to educational programs and seeking to demonstrate new scientific insights into nature, and has been involved in research, writing, lecturing, and organizing peace issues with special emphasis on nuclear weapons.
