An exciting new trend is picking up in DIL schools: former students are returning to become teachers. A local of Pir Paryal, Khairpur, Shamshad Channa, former DIL-IRC teacher and current field monitor in charge of seven schools, was delighted when some of her former students applied to new teacher openings at DIL-IRC Schools. “Unfortunately, there was no school for girls in my village when I was young. It was strongly believed by the villagers that giving their children education is similar to committing a social crime; female education especially was considered a sin,” Shamshad explained. Despite extreme hardship and resentment, she educated herself and paved the way for the girls of her community to receive education. “From early on in my teaching days, it was my dream that my students would become teachers one day and continue my life’s mission.” Last year her dream came true when five of her former students were hired to teach at DIL-IRC schools.
