Walk to Educate
|
It could have been a South Asian Fair or Mela at the Mason Regional Park in Irvine on Saturday May 9th given the festive decor and blue balloons filling the area. Over 350 Pakistanis and non-Pakistanis gathered to raise awareness and funds in their "Walk to Educate" the children of Pakistan organized by Developments in Literacy (DIL) Your DI.
The inaugural 3K walk received a tremendous response that was inspiring to all of the DIL volunteers who had taken several months to plan the event. The walk centered on the four provinces of Pakistan, where activities and food tastings typical of each region were available for the participants at each of the stops along the walk. That afternoon, it seemed that Mason Regional Park had been transplanted to Pakistan. Participants received free T-shirts, gym towels, water bottles and a desi style brown bag lunch with kabab rolls and kulfi at the end of the walk, all of which was included in the registration fee. To top it all off, there was a raffle drawing with prizes for all ages.
The chief guest was Mayor Sukhee Kang of Irvine who performed the ribbon cutting ceremony to start the "Walk to Educate". The President of the DIL-LA chapter, Perveen Ali, thanked everyone and reminded the supporters that, "Now more than ever, the children of Pakistan need our support. These kids deserve a better and brighter future".
