DIL School In Khairpur Returning to Normal After Civil Unrest
The civil unrest and riots that followed the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, reached all corners of Pakistan. A DIL-NOWA school in Madina Colony, Khairpur, was broken into by looters who stole the computers and fans and burned classroom furniture, library books and student records.
The police were unable to assist the school staff due to the large number of cases they were working on. School officials appealed directly to the community for help in retrieving the computers and fans, including an announcement at the local mosque. The school staff explained the importance of these items in providing education to children and the long-term impact on development of the community. The looters were offered anonymity if they returned any stolen school item.
Within a week, all the computers and two fans were returned to the school. DIL is in the process of replacing the items burned by the looters.
