DIL’s Achievements in 2008

DTEC– In early 2008, DIL’s main focus  was to establish, equip and staff the DIL Teacher Education Center (DTEC) in Islamabad.  After its establishment, the DTEC staff directed its attention on the intensive summer training for DIL teachers on subject content in English, Urdu and Math as well as workshops on pedagogical skills.  In addition, all new DIL teachers underwent a comprehensive  pre-service training.

Infrastructure Improvement- In 2008, DIL completed construction on three new schools, started construction on three additional schools and purchased the Mehran School through funds raised by DIL UK.   In addition, DIL invested over $100,000 in improving existing schools and grounds.  New rooms and restrooms were added to several schools to accommodate the growing student population.

Curriculum- In 2008, DIL introduced its new English and Urdu curriculum for the Kindergarten, Grade 1 and 2.  The curriculum was well-received and provided teachers the tools they needed, including: a teacher’s guide with lesson plans for the full year; print and audio materials and suggestions for activities; classroom management strategies; and culturally-relevant story books. 

Science Program- 2008 also saw the pilot of an inquiry-based science program in 17 of the Orangi schools in Karachi, funded by Schering Plough.   The science program, conducted by Dr. Rafia Ali,  was such a tremendous success that Schering Plough has committed to funding the next phase of the program.

Extra-Curricular Activity Program- In the past year DIL launched an extra-curricular activity program that included inter-school competitions such as spelling bees, art contests and singing competitions.  The competitions took place in the Rawalpindi and Islamabad schools, and were so popular with the students that they will be replicated in all other projects in 2009. 
In Khairpur, an interactive theatre program was introduced in which students created and performed plays about social issues that they confront on a daily basis.
