DIL News 2009 - Winter
A Message from the New Board Chair
2008 was a year of challenges: the global economic crisis; the political turmoil in Pakistan; threats from the Taliban, who burnt down a DIL girls’ school in Dir and a devastating earthquake in Baluchistan, which claimed the lives of 3 DIL students.
But, 2008 was also a year of tremendous growth for DIL. Our newly established DIL Teacher Education Center (DTEC) in Islamabad trained over 600 DIL teachers, students and teachers embraced the new English and Urdu curriculum, and 68% of DIL students who took the Board Matriculation Exam attained 1st division. In 2008, we also saw the first group of DIL students attend college.
We would like to dedicate our progress in 2008 to the memory of the 3 young women who lost their lives in the Baluchistan earthquake. Their devotion to education, sometimes at the risk of their own lives, continues to inspire us all.
In spite of the tumultuous year, DIL had its most successful fundraising year ever. We are deeply grateful for your continued support and you can rest assured that your donations directly benefit disadvantaged children in the remote and underdeveloped areas of Pakistan.
By educating DIL students you are not only giving them an opportunity to change their own future, but the future of their families and their communities.
With Best Wishes for the New Year,
Sara Abbasi
