An Education for Kiran
On a recent monitoring visit to Qaim Din Solangi Junior School, DIL Pakistan’s Executive Director, Tauseef Hyat, found a young girl standing outside a classroom, peering into the window. She approached the girl and asked her why she was not in school. The young girl, Kiran, replied that she had attended this school until grade 2.
When Ms. Hyat inquired about Kiran, local teachers told her Kiran’s story. Kiran had been abandoned at birth by her mother and taken in by a kind-hearted, but poor couple in the village. She grew up and attended the Qaim Din Solangi Junior School where she studied up to grade 2. As her classmates moved onto grade 3, Kiran was unable to attend because her parents could not afford the cost of travel to the next village where the school was located. Each day, when her daily chores were completed, she would walk to her old school and stand outside the window and dream about being in school again.
Touched by her story and desire to study, Ms. Hyat asked the local partner Indus Resource Centre (IRC) to pursue the matter. IRC and the Head Teacher of Kiran’s old school, met with Kiran’s parents, and persuaded them to allow Kiran to study further and join the model school at village Kumb. IRC has now arranged for Kiran to enroll in grade 3 and continue her education. Kiran’s dream of returning to school has come true.
